Project Crane - Group E

Cranes have a long history since the 6^th Century B.C and were first invented by Ancient Greeks which were powered by man or animals but as men prospered , new types of cranes were invented which include huge tower cranes and small-light weight portable cranes. But we will be working on a portable crane in a group to present our best proposal to the companies.

A portable crane is a lifting machine that can be used both to lift and lower materials and to move them from one place to another sometimes while carrying a load. Nowadays, there are small portable cranes that are being utilized worldwide by a wide variety of companies in many industries like FAA, Military Contractors, Energy Industry, 3M, aircraft manufacturers, and many more. But these are most effective in disaster areas like Chile,Haiti(2010) and in Pakistan(2005).

Above are the different cranes I researched upon before selecting the final design.

Following are the Design Factors to be considered for our final design.

1) Weight/Size

· Be able to fit at back of standard 4x4 vehicles or via small helicopters

· Light weight

· Easily disassembled/assembled

2) Cost

· What materials to be used

· Price must be lower than competitors

· Availability of materials

3) Features

· Transport the load not less than 4m from the point of lift.

· Be able to be disassembled and carried manually over 100m of rough ground.

· Adjustable Legs for more effectiveness

· Compact design for lower spaces

· Powered by electric winch orhand-cranked

4) Load Management

· Able to lift at least 1000kg

· Lifting at different angles

· Ability to lift extra weight without breaking
